The Ancient Art of Runes: History and Divination

The Whispering Stones

Runes are the letters in a set of related alphabets known as runic alphabets, which were used to write various Germanic languages before the adoption of the Latin alphabet. But they were always more than just letters—they were magical symbols.

The Elder Futhark

The oldest and most common set is the Elder Futhark, consisting of 24 runes. It is divided into three "aetts" (families) of 8 runes each.

How to Cast

Unlike Tarot, which relies on spreads, Runes are often "cast." You can reach into a bag and pull one out (Odin's Rune), or grab a handful and drop them on a cloth, reading only the ones that land face up.

Key Runes

  • Fehu: Wealth, cattle, new beginnings.
  • Thurisaz: Protection, thorn, defense.
  • Ansuz: Communication, divine wisdom.
  • Raido: Travel, journey, movement.
